aptitude-common software package provides architecture indepedent files for the aptitude package manager, you can install in your Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install aptitude-common
aptitude-common is installed in your system.
Make ensure the aptitude-common package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep aptitude-common *
You will get with aptitude-common package name, version, architecture and description in a table
